One certainly hopes that the new pipe will improve conditions in the canal, but I guess only time will tell. And while I think the canal&#39;s condition will be seeing a marked improvement over where its been in the past, I do agree w/ you about the pathogens and don&#39;t think that the clean-up efforts will manage to bring the canal anywhere near a pristine state. Doesn&#39;t it go both directions? It was reported that a waste pipe was installed inside the Flushing Tunnel in 1945 to take away sewage. Fresh water was being pumped in through the large tunnel into the head of the canal with dirty water being taken away in the little pipe inside the Flushing Tunnel. <br />The waste pipe dissolved from all the salt water coming from the channel and could no longer be used. This pipe is what is being rebuilt inside the Flushing Tunnel now. It carried away a limited amount of sewage from the canal in the past, and since the new pipe is the same size as the old, not that much more sewage will be taken out of the canal once it is rebuilt. It&#39;s hard to see how all the new sewage from the Atlantic Yards will fit into the replacement waste pipe, which makes it hard to believe there will be less sewage than there is now. <br />Wish we could all be optimistic about a reduced level of pathogens in the canal after all the work, but it doesn&#39;t seem likely, especially if the increased rate of rain fall in NYC comes to pass.Gowanushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11669436547423588332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8761196616295760317.post-9261469456367988742010-02-02T12:47:16.365-08:002010-02-02T12:47:16.365-08:00Thanks for the info Linda.
